Alex Van Halen is probably not as recognized as he deserves to be. The Beat behind 1970's -2000's band Van Halen, he was largely overshadowed by his guitar playing virtuoso brother Eddie Van Halen.
On closer inspection Alex's playing and drum sounds were truely ground breaking and along with the other members of the band he produced the 1978 album "Van Halen" which helped reestablish rock music in a sea of Punk and Disco.
The track "Hot for Teacher" from the album 1984 is a drumming classic and a great example of Alex's style. It's rare to hear such a technically impressive performance on a top 40 song. Check out the video below.
